Public Event Confirmation
Novel may update or shorten the event name to aid in the marketing. For example, a musical performance by John Smith may be updated to Live Music- John Smith to make advertising clear to the audience on what kind of event it is.
Marketing
Novel has a Marketing team that works to advertise all of our public events. As a venue, we need to maintain an aesthetic and ensure readability of all event posters. We will design an event poster for you!!! Please just provide us an image or images that represent you. Examples would be a head shot, a band photo, a logo, or something that represents your vibe. Events may be cross posted to partners such as Portland Old Port and Creative Portland to advertise the event and encourage attendance.

By uploading an image, you confirm that you own the rights to the image or have obtained the necessary permissions to use it. You grant Novel LLC a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, and distribute the image for marketing and promotional purposes. You agree to indemnify and hold Novel LLC harmless from any claims, damages, or liabilities arising from the use of the image.
Payment Information
Novel is a community based performance space. To ensure that we can continue to operate and to make sure that performers are paid for their work, we offer the below options for performers.
Option 1: Free.
This option is for performers who are also doing this for a community value or just for the fun of it. Choosing to do an event for free helps provide a low barrier activity for the community to come out aFnd enjoy. When an event is free, performers will have their tab covered by Novel on the night of the event. You are welcome to have alcohol, but please drink responsibly. Performers are welcome to put out a donation or tip bucket.
Option 2: 100% of Net Ticket Sales.
This option will have the performer take 100% of Net Ticket Sales. We recommend this option for tickets $10 or below where the performer is also trying to exercise their community value and keep ticket prices low barrier, but still need some compensation for time and effort. Exceptions can be made to provide 100% of net ticket sales to performers for higher ticket prices, but exceptions will be decided on a case-by-case basis with the Novel Event Manager.
Option 3: 60% of Net Ticket Sales.
This option is for performers who are established or feel they will have a strong pull. This can also be for events like workshops where there may be more individualized attention and the performer needs to cover cost of materials. 60% of Net Ticket Sales will be paid to the performer. 40% of sales will remain with the venue to cover operational expenses and marketing. There is no limit to this ticket price, however, for musical performances a price of $10-$20 seems to strike the right balance for attendance.
Option 4: Other.
Please only select this option if it has already been discussed with the Novel Event Manager.
Below is a table of what you could anticipate for payment based on ticket price:
**Net ticket sales will be Gross ticket sales minus tax, tips, and payment processing fees.
Novel pays performers via mobile check that is emailed. Please enter the name and email of the person that Novel should write the check to. Payment will be made within 5 business days after the event.
Additional Information
Novel's performance space, The Archive, has occupancy for 50 seated or 70 standing. We recommend seated for most performances, but please let us know if standing is more appropriate if something like dancing is expected.
For musical performances where live mixing the performance would be helpful, a Sound Board Operator is recommended. The venue will attempt to secure a Sound Board Operator, pending availability. If selected, the Sound Board Operator will be paid from ticket sales and the remaining ticket sales will be divided according to the payment option selected. Performers are welcome to bring their own Sound Board Operator.
